Zoológico de Chapultepec

During the period from June 24, 1992 and August 1, 1994, Chapultepec Zoo was completely remodeled through the project “Ecological Rescue Chapultepec Zoo.” A multidisciplinary group including experts in various areas such as designers, engineers, biologists and veterinarians worked in all aspects of the project, seeking to cover the four major objectives of a modern zoo, i.e., recreation, education, research and conservation of wildlife . For over seventy years, the exhibition was classified according to the taxonomic groups: primates, felines, canines, herbivores, birds, reptiles, etc.. The concept has changed to reflect the fact that the animals live together in nature, so now are grouped by bio-climatic zones according to their natural habitat. There are four climates, cold and wet (temperate forest and coastal), cold and dry (grassland), hot and humid (tropical rainforest) hot and dry (arid and savanna). Mexico has all these regions, and at the beginning of each exhibit animals native to the country are exhibited. Exhibits were built trying to recreate a natural habitat for each species, which gives visitors a better understanding of nature and provides the animal enrichment.

Turtle

Turtles are reptiles of the order Testudines characterised by a special bony or cartilaginous shell developed from their ribs and acting as a shield. “Turtle” may refer to the order as a whole (American English) or to fresh-water and sea-dwelling testudines (British English).

The order Testudines includes both extant (living) and extinct species. The earliest known members of this group date from 157 million years ago, making turtles one of the oldest reptile groups and a more ancient group than snakes or crocodilians. Of the 327 known species alive today, some are highly endangered.

Turtles are ectotherms-their internal temperature varies according to the ambient environment, commonly called cold-blooded. However, because of their high metabolic rate, leatherback sea turtles have a body temperature that is noticeably higher than that of the surrounding water.

Turtles are classified as amniotes, along with other reptiles, birds, and mammals. Like other amniotes, turtles breathe air and do not lay eggs underwater, although many species live in or around water.

The Besta-wan Big House in Carlsbad

“We’ve almost saturated the business at the original one,” said Sanchez, explaining that the kitchen at the 3,000-square-foot Cardiff location is too small to handle any more customers. So Sanchez and his wife, Becky, leased a former Tony Roma’s just west of Westfield Carlsbad mall last spring and then spent several months remodeling the 6,000-square-foot space into a Besta-Wan. “This is the Besta-Wan on steroids,” said Sanchez, adding that it’s been a challenge matching the coziness of the Cardiff location, a former private residence on Aberdeen Drive. “It’s hard to replicate the ‘little house’ feel.” But similar to Cardiff, the Carlsbad restaurant is decorated with a wide variety of eye-catching items. They include metal fortune cookies, album covers, model cars, pictures of celebrities, cheerful sayings and memorabilia.

Terracotta

Terracotta, terra cotta or terra-cotta, a type of earthenware, is a clay-based unglazed or glazed ceramic, where the fired body is porous. Its uses include vessels (notably flower pots), water and waste water pipes, bricks, and surface embellishment in building construction, along with sculpture such as the Terracotta Army and Greek terracotta figurines. The term is also used to refer to items made out of this material and to its natural, brownish orange color, which varies considerably. In archaeology and art history, “terracotta” is often used to describe objects such as figurines, not made on a potter’s wheel. Objects made on a wheel from the same material, are called pottery; the choice of term depends on the type of object rather than the material.

Bacchus

Bacchus the Bouvier des Flandres is a herding dog breed originating in Flanders. They were originally used for general farm work including cattle droving, sheep herding, and cart pulling, and nowadays as guard dogs and police dogs, as well as being kept as pets. The French name of the breed means, literally, “Cow Herder of Flanders”, referring to the Flemish origin of the breed. Other names for the breed are Toucheur de Boeuf (cattle driver), Vlaamse Koehond (Flemish cow dog), and Vuilbaard (dirty beard).

History

The monks at the Ter Duinen monastery in Flanders were among the earliest known breeders of Flanders. The bouviers bred by them are recorded as having been bred from imports such as Irish wolfhounds and Scottish deerhounds with local farm dogs, until a breed considered to be the predecessor of the modern Bouvier des Flandres was obtained. This became a working dog able to perform tirelessly, herding and guarding cattle and even pulling cargo carts, thanks to its strength and temperament, and to withstand the local weather conditions due to its thick coat.

The Besta-wan Big House in Carlsbad

It took nearly 50 years, but iconic Besta-Wan Pizza House in Cardiff is finally adding a second location. A new Besta-Wan featuring the same laid-back atmosphere and eclectic décor opened last month in northern Carlsbad near the city’s border with Oceanside. The goal is bringing a new group of customers the same funky vibe that’s been popular with surfers and families in Cardiff since 1965, owner Julio Sanchez.

Dog Rules

1. The dog is not allowed in the house.

2. Ok, the dog is allowed in the house, but only in certain rooms.

3. The dog is allowed in certain rooms, but has to stay off the furniture.

4. The dog can only get on the old furniture.

5. Fine, the dog is allowed an all of the furniture, but is not allowed to sleep on the beds with the humans.

6. oK, the dog is allowed on the bed, but only by invitation.

7. The dog can sleep on the bed whenever he wants, but not under the covers.

8. The dog can sleep under the covers by invitation only.

9. The dog can sleep under the covers every night.

10. Humans must ask permission to sleep under the covers with the dog.

The best known feature is the Teatro al Aire Libre Lindbergh, or simply Foro Lindbergh which consists of five monumental pillars, topped with marquesinas and surrounded by a serpentine pergola. There is also a fountain with a sculpture of a woman with large jars, from which water used to flow. This was created by José María Hernández Urbina; the model was Luz Jiménez, who also modeled for Diego Rivera. The five pillars define the stage area, which also contains a four-section relief/mural by Roberto Montenegro, called “Alegoría al Teatro”. The forum is in an extreme disrepair, though in January 2013 the borough announced that it had secured budget to repair it.

Landscape

There are two main meanings for the word landscape: it can refer to the visible features of an area of land, or to an example of the genre of painting that depicts such an area of land. Landscape, in both senses, includes the physical elements of landforms such as (ice-capped) mountains, hills, water bodies such as rivers, lakes, ponds and the sea, living elements of land cover including indigenous vegetation, human elements including different forms of land use, buildings and structures, and transitory elements such as lighting and weather conditions.

The park contains a number of other fountains, ponds, waterfalls and light posts that simulate tree trunks. A large pond or small lake is inhabited by ducks and swans. Many of the trees and other plants are native to humid areas of the Mediterranean such as Lebanese cypress, mimosas, and palms. There is also more exotic flora such as bamboo. Some of the existing trees were planted when the park was established. The clock tower is Art Deco with ironwork and bells to mark the hour. In the past, the clock tower played classical music to mark the hour.
